When 'Widely Recyclable' isn't.

According to this article in the WSJ, "Companies are set to start labeling plastic packaging commonly used for yogurt, cottage cheese, and butter as 'widely recyclable'", which is based on the premise that 60% of consumers in the U.S. are allowed to put polypropylene containers in their recycling bins. Even if it is true that 60% of consumers are now allowed (which is questionable), that doesn't mean that recycling actually happens. Polyporopylene, one of the most widely used packaging for consumer goods, had a U.S. recycling rate of 2.7% in 2018. Labeling a plastic as "widely recycleable" when it is effectively is not, is a deceptive practice and doesn't help us solve the plastic crisis. How2Recycle should be honest in their representation of our plastic crisis.
